As the manufacturer’s flagship smartphone, the Nokia N8 offers all of the functionality and technology you would expect, and then some. Thanks to a spec list which includes a 3.5 inch touchscreen, 16GB of onboard storage capacity, Wi-Fi internet and a camera boasting no less than 12 megapixels, the Nokia N8 offers something for everyone, and poses a serious threat to the mainstream smartphone models.

The kick off, the Nokia N8 looks great. Its angular lines and sleek profile make it as aesthetically pleasing as any other phone currently available; however the Nokia N8 has a trick up its sleeve, with the availability of several bright colour variants. This is a smart move from the manufacturer as many people now see their mobile phone as a fashion statement. The front of the handset is dominated by a sizeable 3.5 inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. This boasts the ability to display up to 16 million pixels within its setup of 360x 640; the result being superb quality display of the onscreen imagery. Proximity and accelerometer sensors are provided as standard as well as multi-touch input support and Gorilla glass protecting it from damage, should the worst happen. Ask Jo Harlow how it feels to have one of the most difficult jobs in the mobile industry and you’re likely to get a good-natured laugh in return. As Nokia’s recently-appointed head of Smart Devices, Harlow is tasked with overseeing the Finnish giant’s transition from its homegrown Symbian platform to Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system.

Jo Harlow, Nokia’s Executive Vice President of Smart Devices

Since its February announcement, the Nokia-Microsoft tie-up has been one of the most closely scrutinized partnerships in the wireless industry. The future of Nokia and, to a certain extent, of Microsoft’s mobile ambitions largely hinges on the success of the two companies’ alliance.

Harlow, who is based in the UK but travels often to the U.S. and Nokia’s Finland offices, doesn’t deny that her new post is characterized by hard work and long hours. But she says she regards Nokia’s current “cultural transition” as a “huge opportunity”. “It’s very exciting to be in this place right now,” said Harlow in an interview during a quick trip to New York. “It’s one of the most exciting jobs in the industry.” Continue reading ‘Nokia’s Smartphone Chief On Microsoft Alliance, Future Windows Devices’ »

In the fast-paced world of smartphones, Nokia is currently regarded as a laggard. Its latest smartphones, which run on its long-established Symbian operating system, aren’t competitive with the industry’s highest-end devices and its highly anticipated Microsoft-powered smartphones are still in development.

Nokia has been working behind the scenes on its Microsoft smartphone partnership, however, and issued a press release Thursday to detail its efforts.

As the release notes, the pact is consistent with the terms both companies have been describing since their original February 11 announcement. The April 21 document simply represents the “definitive agreement” between Nokia and Microsoft on these matters. Continue reading ‘Nokia And Microsoft Reveal Details Of Smartphone Pact’ »

The Nokia X5 looks like a typical fashion phone to the naked eye, its square shape a welcome break from the host of bar shaped phones available. Delve a little deeper however and you will find that this attractive model is more than a pretty face, and is actually a good quality smartphone with great media features. So could this be the model that is the perfect compromise between looks and functionality?

Typically, when a handset offers a more compact design, something is sacrifced, and more often than not this is text input with keys becoming more cramped and screens becoming smaller. The X5 has overcome this issue my making this phone a slider design, meaning tucked away beneath the screen there is a fully functioning four row Qwerty keypad. Yes this adds a little depth to the unit, but considering the benefits that it brings this can easily be forgiven. The size is not the only eye catching feature of this model, design wise it is very neat, and upon release will be available in blue, green, pink and purple colours as well as the traditional graphite black. Such a range is going to make this phone hugely popular with the younger market as well as females looking for a stylish yet small phone to slip into a handbag. Despite being essentially a messenging device, it is hard to see the X5 competing head to head with the likes of the Blackberry Pearl 3G, these handsets appealing to the more business orientated user. The front of the device gives you a high quality screen and a row of five keys. The screen is 2.36 inches in diameter, and offers a good image both on graphics and photographs thanks to a 320 x 240 resolution, similar to models such as the E5 within the current range. The keys beneath the screen are the centrally placed directional pad, flanked by start and end call buttons, then towards the perimeters of the model the home key and an always useful music key which instantly accesses your audio files. The Nokia E7 is Nokia’s business version of the N8. As such, it has many similarities but a few core differences. People looking for some of the snazzier features, such as the 12 megapixel camera, may be disappointed but business professionals after outstanding email capabilities and document functionality will be suitably impressed. The E7 was announced to much fanfare at the Nokia World Expo in September 2010, but we’ve had to wait several months, and a few delays, for the phone to finally be shipped. Some people will have to wait longer than others as the phone will initially only be available in “select markets”.

In a review for Know Your Mobile, Richard Goodwin has (almost) nothing but praise for the phone. The slide out QWERTY keyboard is one of its standout features, but according to Goodwin, it’s also its trickiest. That is simply because there is a trick to getting it to slide out properly. All About Symbian’s Rafe Blandford says the trick is to let the springs do most of the work; all you need to do is give it a gentle push. The Nokia N8 was a sizzle in the market. It was tagged as the first 12 mega pixels camera phone in the market by Nokia. Other companies have had their debut with their 12 Mega pixels phone already. Sony Ericsson had launched its Satio and Samsung had its Pixon 12 but Nokia was a bit late in the industry. Earlier people used to say that Nokia is always the first one to create the sizzle in the market with a new technology, but its streak broke this time when it came for a 12 mega pixel camera phone.

I still remember that Nokia had launched N95 as the first 5 mega pixel phone in the market. Thereafter, Sony Ericsson came with its K850 and other brands also jumped off with their items. But this time, it was a bit late. We were expecting that N8 is going to bring a tough rivalry for all the currently existing brands. But such a threat was not experienced. We kept on thinking but new issues began coming. The N8 did not have a detachable battery and people started buying the C7. And people began saying that the N8 was a failure.
