With the proliferation of cell phone ownership a resulting impact on driving safety is occurring. Mobile phones make another distraction for drivers who already attempt questionable feats like eating while driving, applying makeup while driving, or you may even see people trying to read while driving. All the distractions can cause injury or even death, yet they are choices that could be avoided. These activities do not need to happen while driving, yet people continually choose to do them. As cell phones are not going away anytime soon and people will not stop using their mobile phones while driving might as well try to make it as safe as possible.

One of the first things someone can do to be safer while driving is to get familiar with their cell phone. Many phones come with voice activation that gets ignored, never programmed. Similarly, there are one-button speed dial options on most phones. Using these options will make one much safer while driving. Rather then try to scroll through a contact list or dialing a number, these options help keep eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel.

Some of the safest tips are the most obvious. Keep the phone within easy arm’s reach. This means take the cell phone out of the holster or purse and place it in an open area where it will not slide away. Keep calls short. Tell people you are driving and you will call them back when it is safer to talk. Do not compound the problem of using a cell phone and driving by trying to write notes all at the same time. Nor try to looking while driving for numbers you have written down elsewhere. If possible use passengers to look up numbers, dial calls, write notes, etc. The safest obvious tip (and a lifesaver), make calls while you are parked.

The most important tip of all is to not use a cell phone at all if the weather is bad or the traffic is bad. Your life could be on the line, so do not try it.

Do you like your driver’s license? Keep it in good standing by obeying the law including any mobile phone law that pertains to your area. Read up and stay safe. Still, regardless if the law requires you to or not, it is a good idea to use a hands free driving device for your cell phone. Visit and find out more.
